Location
The class will meet in the classroom of the Hole of the Wall Shooting Range in McAllen, TX. See homepage for address and directions.
Fees
The standard class fee is $125 per student. CHL Renewals are $75. The shooting range has rental guns available and can also provide ammunition at a reasonable cost.
Course Length
The required course time is ten hours for a new license and four hours for renewals
Health and Safety Considerations
- Please do not bring firearms into the classroom. If you have a question about your firearm leave it in your car and ask me about it.
- Please do not bring a firearm, or its magazine, to the range loaded.
- Smoking is not permitted in the classroom. However you may smoke outside the building during the hourly breaks.
Required Equipment for the Range

- One handgun of .32 caliber or greater, in good repair with no modifications that would make it less safe.
- I strongly encourage you to practice with the gun you intend to shoot before the day of the test.
- The proficiency course requires 50 rounds of factory ammunition. It is recommended that you bring at least 2 boxes of factory ammunition (100 rounds) to cover practice and qualification. Ammunition is available for purchase at the range for a nominal fee.
- If you show proficiency with a semiautomatic you will qualify to carry any legal handgun.
- If you show proficiency with a revolver you will qualify to carry anything except a semiautomatic.
Attire
Wear comfortable clothing. For safety reasons:
- Shoes must cover the foot
- Wear a shirt or blouse with a fairly high collar
- Hearing and eye protection will be available (at no cost) at the range; however, you may bring your own if you prefer
- Holsters are not required
- I encourage participation by the physically challenged. Please request assistance if it will help you with the training.
I will inspect all range equipment. If you have questions it will be a lot easier if you get them answered before we begin shooting.
Getting a CHL Packet
If you need to get your CHL packet (fingerprint cards, applicant forms, photo holder, etc) you may start the process by paying the application fee by credit card on the DPS website at:

The fee charged by the State of Texas is separate from our training fees. If you prefer to pay by check or money order, I will make every attempt to have traditional CHL packets available during the class.
